Fully Inhaling Vs. Puffing

Recommended Posts

I've heard, from more than one source, that hookah tobacco smoke is not meant to be inhaled, but puffed, similar to a cigar. This is why coughing or lack of ability to inhale wasnt an issue for people smoking tombeik in Iranian style heads. They would never inhale it directly, but bring some of the smoke into their mouths, "swish" it around in their mouths, then exhale it. They would get a tobacco flavor, but wouldnt suffer the ill effects. I have also heard that this is a good way to experience a really good flavor without damaging one's lungs. I tried this, to good effect, with my white peach Starbuzz and yesterday with the Mango flavored Potion. Giving the smoke more time to sit in the nose and mouth allows for more flavor to be absorbed than in traditional inhaling and exhaling. I could see how this practice would have been the accepted method with tombeik or other traditional style tobaccos.

Does this make sense? Do you think this would help you? I'm almost curious to try Zaghloul or Tombeik with this method to see if it is more acceptable as a practice.

Puffed since it was made.

Edit: I simply can not afford to inhale. My setup produces so much smoke [E- and Flavor of course] that just puffing it is satisfying. Edited by Codename067

I believe the traditional way is to puff like a cigar. When i had a session with my grandpa, he's like "why are you taking in so much smoke? You're only suppose to take a little hit and enjoy the taste."

I still prefer to inhale though.

Code, you're telling me that the smoke you were exhaling in your 2 videos where not inhaled and only collected in the mouth?

If its in your nose, unless you inhaled through your nose, its already gone through your lung tunnel as I like to call it.

I inhale too ofcourse. And the hits on my videos are not fully inhaled. I would say a good half was inhaled. When I inhale I go half way and just release.

What I've observed from hookah and cigarettes is this:

Hookah, you're taking in such a large volume of smoke that it is inhaled while some is still left in the mouth which is not intentionally inhaled

Cigarette, you take in a small amount of smoke which stays in the mouth unless it is intentionally inhaled (as it is supposed to be).

So, taking an extremely large hit is filling up your lungs with smoke plus more left over in your mouth.

I started smoking hookah when I lived in Saudi Arabia (1997). I just spent two years in Iraq, I am in Iraq now, and I will stay here 3-5 more years. In the Arab world, the hookah is smoked, and the smoke is inhaled. Most Arabs smoke cigarettes as well, so they are used to smoking (and inhaling). I smoke that Zaghloul tobacco infrequently. It is strong and harsh, and has no fruit flavor. I get a "buzz" from it. Sometimes, I will mix Zaghloul with Mint or other fruit flavored tobacco.

there is no way you could puff the large clouds if you didnt inhale. i like a cigar once in a while and even then the smoke doesnt amount to the density of smoke people post on youtube. i havent seen a hookah smoker who just "puffs".

wow. I've never heard of it being puffed.

That's the thing though isn't it - I could never take 3/4 long hard pulls off a cigarette without dying, yet with shisha it's like inhaling silk.... it's just creamy and smooth. Loverly!

well in the middle east, a lot of people puff on it, not inhale. i think inhaling huge amount of smoke was part of the westernization of hookah. i mean i see middle easterners down at the local hookah lounghe taking huge hits but then, the older middle easten clients just puff on it. i sat on a table near some and one of them kept giving us weird looks when we inhaled and exhaled all that smoke. also i've noticed that it lasts longer when you puff, the flavour is stronger.

I have been to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Turkey and what i have seen is that when the men are smoking salloum, tombeik, zaghloul something WITHOUT foil then the majority tend to puff, let the pipe rest on their lap and leave tip in one side of their mouth and release the smoke from the other (traditional method indeed) and just chill out. When iv seen men smoking ma'assel and it is usually Nakhla of any flavour variety, then they seem to be more active and just smoke however they wish to, puffing, inhaling, taking a big hit then a little one. I believe INTENSITY is a major player in either if someone is puffing or inhaling. If they did a poll on tangiers and starbuzz for example, puff or inhale, then the percentages for tangiers puffing would be higher than that of starbuzz. IMO.

I guess I do a little of both. I like to inhale, thats why I do not smoke cigars because I turn green...lol
I like to just puff on the Hookah as well and do just what you have described. It does give you a better taste on the inhale and exhale that way.

It is true that we do inhale unintentionally like MechAnt stated [or else, where in the world is all the smoke being stored? one's mouth can not hold much, so as you take a big hit, after 2 seconds worth of pulling, everything you are smoking is most likely being inhaled] [Just assuming].

I, on n' off, fully inhale hits and exhale [through my nose] for ultimate flavor...but I do not keep on doing it.

i puff, however i found that i cant create enough force to pull the smoke into the water and out of my hose with my mouth, like with a cig/cigar/pipe you use oral suction, but i cant seem to do it with a hookah, anyone know why?

im also thinking it may be the hookah im using, it has a few leaks Edited by nat3r

I must say IMO this is how I see the whole inhaling and puffing thing.

We are essentially "accidently" inhaling otherwise as also code said where is the smoke supposed to be???

I do a good mix of both I puff and inhale it all depends upon my mood that day. I really haven’t noticed any flavor difference in the two but then again I never thought about it.
